Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled, Full-Time Bench Electronics Technician to join our busy retail service center. In this role, you will diagnose, maintain, and repair a vast range of customer equipment—from classic vintage tube amplifiers and analog mixing consoles to modern digital desks, DSP processors, and wireless audio gear. The ideal candidate possesses a deep love for audio technology, master-level component soldering skills, and a logical mind for troubleshooting diverse circuit topologies.
Core Responsibilities
Comprehensive Diagnostics: Perform component-level troubleshooting on both vintage legacy gear and modern digital multi-layer surface-mount boards.
Precision Repair & Restoration: Replace capacitors, resistors, ICs, and transistors. Perform meticulous point-to-point rewiring on vintage tube gear, as well as fine pitch surface-mount device (SMD) rework on modern digital equipment.
System Calibration: Align and calibrate equipment back to original factory specifications using oscilloscopes, audio analyzers, and signal generators.
Preventative Maintenance: Recondition scratchy potentiometers, clean switches, re-tube and bias amplifiers, and update firmware or replace digital internal power supplies.
Customer Tech Support: Translate complex technical issues into clear explanations for musicians and audio professionals regarding their repair options and costs.
Service Tracking: Accurately document all diagnoses, parts ordered, and labor hours within our shop’s inventory and billing system.
Required Tools & Technical Skills
Diagnostic Gear: High proficiency operating digital multimeters, dual-trace oscilloscopes, audio signal generators, and bench power supplies.
Schematic Literacy: Exceptional ability to read, interpret, and trace signals through complex analog schematics, digital block diagrams, and service manuals.
Soldering Mastery: Excellent through-hole and SMD soldering skills. Experience using hot-air rework stations and desoldering guns without damaging vintage traces or modern multi-layer PCBs.
Qualifications & Experience
Experience: 2 to 5+ years of professional electronics repair experience, ideally in a fast-paced retail bench environment or dedicated audio service center.
Analog Expertise: Deep understanding of tube circuit safety (handling high-voltage filters), biasing, solid-state linear circuits, and discrete audio paths.
Digital Expertise: Comfortable troubleshooting digital control circuits, microprocessors, switching power supplies, and performing firmware flashing.
Education: Associate degree in Electronics Technology, equivalent trade certification, or extensive proven field experience.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Lifting: Must be able to routinely lift, carry, and maneuver heavy audio equipment, including vintage tube amplifiers, sometimes exceeding 50 lbs, from the intake counter to the repair bench.
Stamina: Ability to remain seated or standing at a repair bench for extended periods while maintaining high concentration and fine motor precision.
Vision: Excellent close-up vision and depth perception (with or without magnification tools) to work on microscopic components and trace circuit paths.
